About the Author

Hi I m Pratibha & im doing job as a web designer & as SEO in private sector in Delhi (India)

major/career.. etc? opinion please!?

I've always pondered about what I should do or major in in the future, so just wanted to ask for your opinions on this.. I've been interested in English/history/law and computers/graphics/animation. since middle school my "what i want to be when I grow up" has always been something in those 2 categories. I'm taking computer programming right now and its pretty good, i'm ok in the art things if i was to be a graphic designer. on the english part, I'm in speech/debate teem, law club, mock trial, teen court, and enjoy all of them, I plan on taking some extra history/gov classes later on if not at school then at a community college. Its still early for me to decide but I still want to hear opinions...
oh and also I have a (smaller) interest in business/politics/economy and definitely dislike math and science. its not like i cant do them but i just get really bored and uninterested in those classes.

Sounds like you have many diverse interests in school--9 categories actually, instead of 2 you indicated. With English, one can be a teacher/writer for example. With Law, one can be a lawyer or a para-legal for example. You get the idea. There should be guidance counselors in your school to steer you in the right direction. There's also a book/self-test that you can take based on what you're "good at" that can give you some-what of a determination as to what career path to take. An important factor to many is also what you will be earning. If teaching for example eventually becomes your calling, you will not be making good money unless you progress to the college level being a professor. This obviously means things we like may not pay well. Also, what we "like", we may not be "good at". Plus, in the USA anyway because I don't know where you're from, getting hired anywhere in the first place is a challenge due to the economy, therefore, I would recommend to choose what is in demand career-wise. Again, school counselors have this info or you can do your own research on-line. By the way, a nurse must take chemistry and I'm sure most nurses never liked the class, however, it's necessary to take that class in order to become a nurse but the chances of ever really using all those equations on the job are next to none. A police officer is bombarded by law classes in the academy, however once on the job one would never remember all that stuff. The best lawyer/doctor still needs to use reference material in the course of his duties and must also keep up w/changes like an in-come tax preparer does. It's good that you have alot of interests as you won't feel you don't have enough career choices. Better to have more options than fewer. Good Luck!

Bored to Death

Bored to Death

$10.38

Appropriately enough for a TV series about a cynical, lackadaisical Brooklynite hipster, the soundtrack to Bored to Death is filled with lackadaisical hip music, trading overt cynicism for a hint of a faux naiveté that’s not only fashionable but suits the flights of fancy Jonathan Ames, as portrayed by Jason Schwartzman, has on the show. Schwartzman’s excellent one-man band pop outfit Coconut Records opens proceedings with the title track setting the pace with his tuneful shuffle, and things never quite depart from that tone, not even when Dan Auerbach shows up to inject a little blues or when Young Marble Giants get starkly arty. Apart from these two cuts, Bored to Death delivers light, tasteful indie pop, the kind that sounds perfect as bumper music on NPR or as background music at a local independent coffeehouse, representing the mildly quirky charms of the show quite well and working as an album on its own merits. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Networked Graphics

$69.95

This broad-ranging book equips programmers and designers with a thorough grounding in the techniques used to create truly network-enabled computer graphics and games. Written for graphics/game/VE developers and students, it assumes no prior knowledge of networking. The text offers a broad view of what types of different architectural patterns can be found in current systems, and readers will learn the tradeoffs in achieving system requirements on the Internet. The book explains the foundations of networked graphics, then explores real systems in depth, and finally considers standards and extensions. Numerous case studies and examples with working code are featured throughout the text, covering groundbreaking academic research and military simulation systems, as well as industry-leading game designs. Everything designers need to know when developing networked graphics and games is covered in one volume - no need to consult multiple sources. The many examples throughout the text feature real simulation code in C++ and Java that developers can use in their own design experiments. Case studies describing real-world systems show how requirements and constraints can be managed.

Get Ready

Get Ready

$7.98

Instead of settling down in front of the mixing board for another dance album (a lá Technique or Republic), New Order returned in 2001 with a sound and style they hadn't played with for over a decade. Unsurprisingly bored by the stale British club scene circa 2001, the band opened Get Ready with a statement of purpose, a trailer single ("Crystal") featuring a host of longtime New Order staples: a sublime melody, an inscrutable set of lyrics, a deft, ragged guitar line kicking in for the chorus, and Peter Hook's yearning bass guitar taking a near-solo role. Though there are several allowances for the electronic-dance form New Order helped develop, Get Ready is a very straight-ahead album, their first work in 15 years that's focused on songwriting and performance rather than grafted dance techniques. (Of course, the band proved themselves far more than studio hands at several points, stretching back over twenty years to Joy Division's landmark Unknown Pleasures, as well as later New Order LPs like 1985's Low-life and 1986's Brotherhood.)Listeners familiar with the blueprint of early New Order work will find much to love on Get Ready, from the tough rockers "60 Miles an Hour" and "Primitive Notion" to pastoral downtempo material like "Turn My Way," "Vicious Streak," and the melodica-driven closer "Run Wild." This naked songcraft, however, does reveal a few of the band's deficiencies. Bernard Summer's lyrics drift toward the inane: "I'll be there for you when you want me to/I'll stand by your side like I always do/In the dead of night it'll be alright/cuz I'll be there for you when you want me to." And the band can't help but identify with a younger generation of music-makers, inviting Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie over for "Rock the Shack" and turning in a dense, chaotic production that's all but de rigeur for Gillespie but very strained for New Order. (The other main collaborative track, with stranded Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, is surprisingly unembarassing.) Even for fans who don't need any convincing, Get Ready is a true "grower," an album that reveal its delicious secrets -- sublime songcraft, introverted delivery, collaborative musicianship -- slowly and only after several listens. ~ John Bush, Rovi Performers: Billy Corgan - Vocals; Bobby Gillespie - Vocals

At 23, Matt Davis moved to a remote Mongolian town to teach English. What he found when he arrived was a town—and a country—undergoing wholesale change from a traditional, countryside existence to a more urban, modern identity.  When Things Get Dark documents these changes through the Mongolians Matt meets, but also focuses on the author's downward spiral into alcohol abuse and violence--a scenario he saw played out by many of the Mongolian men around him. Matt's self-destruction culminates in a drunken fight with three men that forces him to a hospital to have his kidneys X-rayed. He hits bottom in that cold hospital room, his body naked and shivering, a bloodied Mongolian man staring at him from an open door, the irrational thought in his head that maybe he is going to die there. His personal struggles are balanced with insightful descriptions of customs and interactions, and interlaced with essays on Mongolian history and culture that make for a fascinating glimpse of a mysterious place and people.
