Will Windows Vista force a migration to alternatives?
Windows Vista is a rumored to be a resource hog and will be loaded with the maxium amount of DRM known to mankind that will require obtaining a certificate and license for virtually every activity.
And although Microsoft Corp. has yet to finalize the minimum requirements for a PC to run Vista, it is unlikely to run the Aero Glass Graphics on anything with intergrated video.
Personally I don't care because I don't use Windows for anything except Tax Software and for that I still have a box that runs Windows 2000.
I much prefer Linux and FreeBSD but I am thinking about moving to MAC for convenience.
But, since most gaming has now moved to consoles and no one really cares very much about a fancy user interface, ( I am more interested in getting things done ) do you think that Windows Vista will force a migration to alternative operating systems?
Or do you think that most companies and home users will stay with 2K or XP until Microsoft stops supporting them and shuts them down?
There is a lot of hype about Vista but this all media generated and clever strategy. Seriously, whose going to care enough to invest in these new things/resources when you have a perfectly fine os like win xp?? Vista is only strong security wise and will be hard to pirate... but otherwise its not got much in it.

Sketch-based Interfaces and Modeling $75 The field of sketch-based interfaces and modeling (SBIM) is concerned with developing methods and techniques to enable users to interact with a computer through sketching - a simple, yet highly expressive medium. SBIM blends concepts from computer graphics, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Recent improvements in hardware, coupled with new machine learning techniques for more accurate recognition, and more robust depth inferencing techniques for sketch-based modeling, have resulted in an explosion of both sketch-based interfaces and pen-based computing devices. Presenting the first coherent, unified overview of SBIM, this unique text/reference bridges the two complementary research areas of user interaction (sketch-based interfaces), and graphical modeling and construction (sketch-based modeling). This book discusses the state of the art of this rapidly evolving field, with contributions from an international selection of experts. Also covered are sketch-based systems that allow the user to manipulate and edit existing data - from text, images, 3D shapes, and video - as opposed to modeling from scratch. Topics and features: reviews pen/stylus interfaces to graphical applications that avoid reliance on user interface modes; describes systems for diagrammatic sketch recognition, mathematical sketching, and sketch-based retrieval of vector drawings; examines pen-based user interfaces for engineering and educational applications; presents a set of techniques for sketch recognition that rely strictly on spatial information; introduces the Teddy system; a pioneering sketching interface for designing free-form 3D models; investigates a range of advanced sketch-based systems for modeling and designing 3D objects, including complex contours, clothing, and hair-styles; and, explores methods for modeling from just a single sketch or using only a few strokes. Intelligent Multimedia Interfaces $5.48 This collection of original contributions reports on key advances in intelligent (knowledge-based) user interfaces that exploit multiple media - text, graphics, maps - and multiple modalities - visual, auditory, gestural - to facilitate human-computer interaction. Chapters are grouped into three sections that address automated presentation design, intelligent multimedia interfaces, and architectural and theoretical issues. Although humans have a natural facility for managing and exploiting multiple input and output media, computers do not. Consequently, providing machines with the ability to interpret multimedia input and generate multimedia output would be a valuable facility for a number of key applications such as information retrieval and analysis, training and decision support. Successful intelligent multimedia interfaces require theories and technologies from a host of disciplines, including computational linguistics, computer graphics, cognitive science, human computer interaction, and computer-supported cooperative work - all of them represented in this collection. Mark T. Maybury is Director of the Bedford Artificial Intelligence Center and Associate Department Head of Advanced Information Systems Technology at The MITRE Corporation. |

Designing Interfaces $39.99 Designing a good interface isn't easy. Users demand software that is well-behaved, good-looking, and easy to use. Your clients or managers demand originality and a short time to market. Your UI technology -- web applications, desktop software, even mobile devices -- may give you the tools you need, but little guidance on how to use them well. UI designers over the years have refined the art of interface design, evolving many best practices and reusable ideas. If you learn these, and understand why the best user interfaces work so well, you too can design engaging and usable interfaces with less guesswork and more confidence. Designing Interfaces captures those best practices as design patterns -- solutions to common design problems, tailored to the situation at hand. Each pattern contains practical advice that you can put to use immediately, plus a variety of examples illustrated in full color. You'll get recommendations, design alternatives, and warnings on when not to use them. Each chapter's introduction describes key design concepts that are often misunderstood, such as affordances, visual hierarchy, navigational distance, and the use of color. These give you a deeper understanding of why the patterns work, and how to apply them with more insight. A book can't design an interface for you -- no foolproof design process is given here -- but Designing Interfaces does give you concrete ideas that you can mix and recombine as you see fit. Experienced designers can use it as a sourcebook of ideas. Novice designers will find a roadmap to the world of interface and interaction design, with enough guidance to start using these patterns immediately. |

Colloids and Interfaces with Surfactants and Polymers $37.5 From blood to milk, pumice to gelatine, most scientists interact with colloids on a daily basis without any real knowledge of their nature. Building on the success of the first edition, Colloids and Interfaces with Surfactants and Polymers Second Edition is a user-friendly, non-technical introduction to colloids and interfaces. Includes::; Many practical examples of colloid and interface science; An enhanced section on fluorescence microscopy, a widely used technique in biological systems for the optical imaging of cellular structures; A new section on phenomenology (the principle of time/temperature superposition), which enables the experimentalist to extend the frequency range of their rheological instruments; New information on sedimentation and strategies for the control of sedimentation, which is critical in many dispersions of commercial importance; Fresh treatments of traditional theoretical topics like the electrical double-layer, colloidal interactions, wetting behavior and light scattering, as well as more recent advances in polymer science, statistical mechanics and the use of neutrons; In-depth discussions of widely used techniques with mathematics used in a straight-forward way so quantitative descriptions of colloid and interface properties can be derived. Colloids and Interfaces with Surfactants and Polymers Second Edition explains all the fundamental concepts of colloids and interfaces as well as detailing some of the more advanced aspects which might be useful in specific applications. Intended for undergraduate and graduate courses in colloids and soft materials, the book is also relevant to those in the chemical, coatings, cosmetics, ceramics, food, pharmaceutical and oil industries. Create Amazing Custom User Interfaces with WPF, C#, and XAML in .NET 3.0 $4.99 This Wrox Blox presents WPF along with the Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML), showing developers how to customize existing user interface controls such as the Button, Progress Bar, CheckBox, Radio Button, and Label along with creating two new custom controls. The Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) released with the .NET 3.0 SDK provides a rich foundation for developing and customizing user interfaces. Unlike existing user interface development tools like GDI and GDI+, WPF is entirely vector-based, offering the developer enhanced two-dimensional and even three-dimensional rendering in the presentation layer. The author customizes these existing controls using XAML to: Create control templates to define their appearance and behaviors. Create two new custom controls, one derived from System.Windows.UserControl and the second from System.Windows.Control. Illustrate the interoperability of WPF content in Windows Forms and Win32 applications. Create the code samples using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 with extensions for .NET 3.0 and the .NET 3.0 SDK. These code samples contain four projects: A C# WPF control library that contains the control templates and a User Control containing the customized Windows controls and the two new custom controls; a C# WPF application to host the WPF User Control; a C# Windows Forms application to host the WPF User Control; and a C++ Win32 application to host the WPF User Control. The Interfaces $135 The Interfaces: Deriving and Interpreting Omitted Structures is a collection of never-before-published papers that explore the nature of the interfaces of syntax with semantics, phonology, and discourse. The papers investigate the various ways in which elliptical structures are related to these interfaces. As such, they not only make a valuable contribution to generative linguistic research but, more generally, help to deepen our understanding of the relation between form and meaning in natural language. In the books introductory chapter, the editors address general issues related to current work on ellipsis and the syntax/semantics, syntax/phonology and syntax/discourse interfaces. The rest of the book is organized into three parts. The first examines PF-deletion accounts of elliptical structures; the second investigates these structures from the perspective of the syntax/semantic interface; and the third explores these from a perspective that concentrates on the relation between semantics and focus and discourse structure. Together the papers collected in this volume offer a convincing demonstration of the value of collaborative research on the interfaces. |

Digital Video and HDTV: Algorithms and Interfaces $90.48 Rapidly evolving computer and communications technologies have achieved data transmission rates and data storage capacities high enough for digital video. But video involves much more than just pushing bits Achieving the best possible image quality, accurate color, and smooth motion requires understanding many aspects of image acquisition, coding, processing, and display that are outside the usual realm of computer graphics. At the same time, video system designers are facing new demands to interface with film and computer system that require techniques outside conventional video engineering. Charles Poynton's 1996 book "A Technical Introduction to Digital Video" became an industry favorite for its succinct, accurate, and accessible treatment of standard definition television (SDTV). In "Digital Video and HDTV," Poynton augments that book with coverage of high definition television (HDTV) and compression systems. For more information on HDTV Retail markets, go to: http: //www.insightmedia.info/newsletters.php#hdtv With the help of hundreds of high quality technical illustrations, this book presents the following topics: * Basic concepts of digitization, sampling, quantization, gamma, and filtering * Principles of color science as applied to image capture and display * Scanning and coding of SDTV and HDTV * Video color coding: luma, chroma (4:2:2 component video, 4"f"SC composite video) * Analog NTSC and PAL * Studio systems and interfaces * Compression technology, including M-JPEG and MPEG-2 * Broadcast standards and consumer video equipment |

Bodies in Code: Interfaces with New Media $39.48 "Bodies in Code "explores how our bodies experience and adapt to digital environments. Cyberculture theorists have tended to overlook biological reality when talking about virtual reality, and Mark B. N. Hansen's book shows what they've been missing. Cyberspace is anchored in the body, he argues, and it's the body--not high-tech computer graphics--that allows a person to feel like they are really "moving" through virtual reality. Of course these virtual experiences are also profoundly affecting our very understanding of what it means to live as embodied beings. Hansen draws upon recent work in visual culture, cognitive science, and new media studies, as well as examples of computer graphics, websites, and new media art, to show how our bodies are in some ways already becoming virtual. |

Taming Hal: Designing Interfaces Beyond 2001 $26.98 Machines dominate our lives, from alarm clocks that wake us up in the morning to radios that lull us to sleep. Most of our interactions with automated machines and computers are problem-free, but more often than we would like, they can be irritating and confusing. This is frequently harmless, such as a VCR recording the wrong show, but when it involves a critical system like an autopilot or medical device it can be a matter of life or death. "Taming HAL" seeks to explain these miscommunications between humans and machines by exploring user interfaces of everyday devices. Degani examines thirty different systems for human use, including watches, consumer electronic products, Internet applications, cars, medical equipment, navigation systems onboard cruise ships, and autopilots of commercial aircraft. Readers will discover why interfaces between people and machines all too often do not work and what needs to be done to avoid potential tragedies. |

Designing Visual Interfaces: Communication Oriented Techniques $90.48 Ironically, many designers of graphical user interfaces are not always aware of the fundamental design rules and techniques that are applied routinely by other practitioners of communication-oriented visual design -- techniques that can be used to enhance the visual quality of GUIs, data displays, and multimedia documents. This volume focuses on design rules and techniques that are drawn from the rational, functionalist design aesthetic seen in modern graphic design, industrial design, interior design, and architecture -- and applies them to various graphical user interface problems experienced in commercial software development. Describes the basic design principles (the what and why), common errors, and practical step-by-step techniques (the how) in each of six major areas: elegance and simplicity; scale, contrast, and proportion; organization and visual structure; module and program; image and representation; and style. Focuses on techniques that will not only improve the aesthetics of the visual display, but, because they promote visual organization, clarity, and conciseness, will also enhance the usability of the product. Includes a catalog of common errors drawn from existing GUI applications and environments to illustrate practices that should be avoided in developing applications. For anyone responsible for designing, specifying, implementing, documenting, or managing the visual appearance of computer-based information displays. |
