nVidia Graphics Driver Refusing to Install?

Hi. I have an nVidia FX 5500 graphics card and Windows XP Home Edition.

I've downloaded the appropriate driver from nVidia's website, and no matter how many times I've tried installing it and reinstalling it, once I restart my computer, it uses the default Windows XP graphics driver.

Why doesn't it use the driver I've just installed? What could be the problem and how do I fix it and get it to use nVidia's driver?

It may be do to windows not allowing 'unsigned drivers' ie ones that haven't been tested through WHQL- windows hardware quality labs' if this is the case it will revert to the driver that has been certified- ie the one that comes preinstalled with windows. try this, click on control panel, choose system, from the box that opens, click on the hrdware tab, you should see a section half way down that says windows device driver signing or similar. click on that it should give you 3 options, ignore unsigned drivers, warn or allow and a tick box to say make this the system default. Choose the last option, tick the box and choose ok at the bottom of the dialogue box, then reboot. Now try installing ya nvidia driver, should now work!
