poor college student, good camera?

I've always wanted to get into photography. The problem is I'm a poor college student.
I know I want a digital that has auto-bracketing (I would like to learn HDR photography). Beyond that I haven't a clue.
How much is such a camera going to run me? Would it be practical to try and get maybe an older model on ebay?
So what do ya'll suggest. What brand and model?

Do you have $150? You can find excellent cameras on craigslist for that or less ... with a lens

You can buy a good used Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR and learn how to use a camera first (taking a class will help you avoid a lot of frustration) and then when you have saved enough money, buy a DSLR of the same brand and continue honing your skills as a photographer ... photographers by definition can use ANY camera, anywhere.

When I was a poor student, I had to buy a 4x5 view camera kit and a 35 mm SLR system with four lenses just to attend school. Now that is poor.
