Will Windows Vista force a migration to alternatives?
Windows Vista is a rumored to be a resource hog and will be loaded with the maxium amount of DRM known to mankind that will require obtaining a certificate and license for virtually every activity.
And although Microsoft Corp. has yet to finalize the minimum requirements for a PC to run Vista, it is unlikely to run the Aero Glass Graphics on anything with intergrated video.
Personally I don't care because I don't use Windows for anything except Tax Software and for that I still have a box that runs Windows 2000.
I much prefer Linux and FreeBSD but I am thinking about moving to MAC for convenience.
But, since most gaming has now moved to consoles and no one really cares very much about a fancy user interface, ( I am more interested in getting things done ) do you think that Windows Vista will force a migration to alternative operating systems?
Or do you think that most companies and home users will stay with 2K or XP until Microsoft stops supporting them and shuts them down?
There is a lot of hype about Vista but this all media generated and clever strategy. Seriously, whose going to care enough to invest in these new things/resources when you have a perfectly fine os like win xp?? Vista is only strong security wise and will be hard to pirate... but otherwise its not got much in it.

Sketch-based Interfaces and Modeling $129 The field of sketch-based interfaces and modeling (SBIM) is concerned with developing methods and techniques to enable users to interact with a computer through sketching - a simple, yet highly expressive medium. SBIM blends concepts from computer graphics, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Recent improvements in hardware, coupled with new machine learning techniques for more accurate recognition, and more robust depth inferencing techniques for sketch-based modeling, have resulted in an explosion of both sketch-based interfaces and pen-based computing devices. Presenting the first coherent, unified overview of SBIM, this unique text/reference bridges the two complementary research areas of user interaction (sketch-based interfaces), and graphical modeling and construction (sketch-based modeling). This book discusses the state of the art of this rapidly evolving field, with contributions from an international selection of experts. Also covered are sketch-based systems that allow the user to manipulate and edit existing data - from text, images, 3D shapes, and video - as opposed to modeling from scratch. Topics and features: reviews pen/stylus interfaces to graphical applications that avoid reliance on user interface modes; describes systems for diagrammatic sketch recognition, mathematical sketching, and sketch-based retrieval of vector drawings; examines pen-based user interfaces for engineering and educational applications; presents a set of techniques for sketch recognition that rely strictly on spatial information; introduces the Teddy system; a pioneering sketching interface for designing free-form 3D models; investigates a range of advanced sketch-based systems for modeling and designing 3D objects, including complex contours, clothing, and hair-styles; and, explores methods for modeling from just a single sketch or using only a few strokes. This text is an essential resource for researchers, practitioners and graduate students involved in human-factors and user interfaces, interactive computer graphics, and intelligent user interfaces and AI. |

Intelligent Multimedia Interfaces $4.48 This collection of original contributions reports on key advances in intelligent (knowledge-based) user interfaces that exploit multiple media - text, graphics, maps - and multiple modalities - visual, auditory, gestural - to facilitate human-computer interaction. Chapters are grouped into three sections that address automated presentation design, intelligent multimedia interfaces, and architectural and theoretical issues. Although humans have a natural facility for managing and exploiting multiple input and output media, computers do not. Consequently, providing machines with the ability to interpret multimedia input and generate multimedia output would be a valuable facility for a number of key applications such as information retrieval and analysis, training and decision support. Successful intelligent multimedia interfaces require theories and technologies from a host of disciplines, including computational linguistics, computer graphics, cognitive science, human computer interaction, and computer-supported cooperative work - all of them represented in this collection. Mark T. Maybury is Director of the Bedford Artificial Intelligence Center and Associate Department Head of Advanced Information Systems Technology at The MITRE Corporation. |

Distributed User Interfaces (Hardcover) $81.41 The recent advances in display technologies and mobile devices is having an important effect on the way users interact with all kinds of devices (computers, mobile devices, laptops, tablets, and so on). These are opening up new possibilities for interaction, including the distribution of the UI (User Interface) amongst different devices, and implies that the UI can be split and composed, moved, copied or cloned among devices running the same or different operating systems. These new ways of manipulating the UI are considered under the emerging topic of Distributed User Interfaces (DUIs).DUIs are concerned with the repartition of one of many elements from one or many user interfaces in order to support one or many users to carry out one or many tasks on one or many domains in one or many contexts of use - each context of use consisting of users, platforms, and environments. The 20 chapters in the book cover between them the state-of-the-art, the foundations, and original applications of DUIs. Case studies are also included, and the book culminates with a review of interesting and novel applications that implement DUIs in different scenarios. |

Coordinating User Interfaces for Consistency $3.98 In the years since Jakob Nielsen's classic collection on interface consistency first appeared, much has changed, and much has stayed the same. On the one hand, there's been exponential growth in the opportunities for following or disregarding the principles of interface consistency-more computers, more applications, more users, and of course the vast expanse of the Web. On the other, there are the principles themselves, as persistent and as valuable as ever. In these contributed chapters, you'll find details on many methods for seeking and enforcing consistency, along with bottom-line analyses of its benefits and some warnings about its possible dangers. Most of what you'll learn applies equally to hardware and software development, and all of it holds real benefits for both your organization and your users. * Begins with a new preface by the collection's distinguished editor. * Details a variety of methods for attaining interface consistency, including central control, user definitions, exemplary applications, shared code, and model analysis. * Presents a cost-benefits analysis of organizational efforts to promote and achieve consistency. * Examines and appraises the dimensions of consistency-consistency within an application, across a family of applications, and beyond. * Makes the case for some unexpected benefits of interface consistency while helping you avoid the risks it can sometimes entail. * Considers the consistency of interface elements other than screen design. * Includes case studies of major corporations that have instituted programs to ensure the consistency of their products. |

Designing Interfaces $39.99 Designing a good interface isn't easy. Users demand software that is well-behaved, good-looking, and easy to use. Your clients or managers demand originality and a short time to market. Your UI technology -- web applications, desktop software, even mobile devices -- may give you the tools you need, but little guidance on how to use them well. UI designers over the years have refined the art of interface design, evolving many best practices and reusable ideas. If you learn these, and understand why the best user interfaces work so well, you too can design engaging and usable interfaces with less guesswork and more confidence. Designing Interfaces captures those best practices as design patterns -- solutions to common design problems, tailored to the situation at hand. Each pattern contains practical advice that you can put to use immediately, plus a variety of examples illustrated in full color. You'll get recommendations, design alternatives, and warnings on when not to use them. Each chapter's introduction describes key design concepts that are often misunderstood, such as affordances, visual hierarchy, navigational distance, and the use of color. These give you a deeper understanding of why the patterns work, and how to apply them with more insight. A book can't design an interface for you -- no foolproof design process is given here -- but Designing Interfaces does give you concrete ideas that you can mix and recombine as you see fit. Experienced designers can use it as a sourcebook of ideas. Novice designers will find a roadmap to the world of interface and interaction design, with enough guidance to start using these patterns immediately. |

Selexels- Adapting User Interfaces to Mobile Input Devices $51.25 Selexels is a conceptual framework that guides a user interface (UI) designer to adapt a UI to input devices with low expressiveness: devices that have limited ability to convey intended meaning. By adjusting the interface, the user can enjoy a fluid and smooth interaction, without suffering from the technical weaknesses of the input device, such as low sampling rate or low resolution. We have evaluated this framework through some user studies using Fitts Law. As a proof of concept, we have implemented Selexel Toolkit. Selexel Toolkit can help UI programmers in two ways. The first way is when a programmer has already created a UI, working properly with the mouse and keyboard, but he wants to change the UI code, so that the same UI can be used with an input device, having low expressiveness, such as a mobile phone. In such a case, the Selexel Toolkit adapts the original UI to match the expressiveness of the input device. The second way is to give programmers a new Layout Manager, in addition to java standard Layout Managers, i.e., a new tool for laying out their UI in a different way with getting advantage of layout constraints that can also be useful in other application areas. |

Seeing Data: Designing User Interfaces for Database Systems Using .Net $3.98 Why do so many computer programs have such poorly designed user interfaces? The most likely reason is that most developers have no training in how to design good graphical user interfaces (GUIs.) Microsoft has included many helpful tools in the .NET Framework for interface design. Many books on .NET have a few pages or at most a chapter on these tools. But until now there has not been a book that shows how to use these tools in detail in the context of sound UI design principles. This book is intended for experienced programmers with a basic knowledge of application development and database systems, but no formal training in the basics of interface design. Acknowledged database design expert Rebecca Riordan calls upon her years of experience in the field to give developers just the right combination of theory and practical information to help them design interfaces that will be easy to use. She includes lots of sample code that readers can take and insert into their own programs, saving them time and money. All code in the book is written in Visual Basic .NET; C# versions are available on the book's companion web site. |

You'll learn to write scripts and software enabling the use of the Kinect as an input device. Interact directly with your computer through physical motion. The Kinect will read and track body movements, and is the bridge between the physical reality in which you exist and the virtual world created by your software. -->--> Microsoft's Kinect was released in fall 2010 to become the fastest-selling electronic device ever. For the first time, we have an inexpensive, three-dimensional sensor enabling direct interaction between human and computer, between the physical world and the virtual. The Kinect has been enthusiastically adopted by a growing culture of enthusiasts, who put it to work in creating technology-based art projects, three-dimensional scanners, adaptive devices for sight-impaired individuals, new ways of interacting with PCs, and even profitable business opportunities. -->-->Meet the Kinect is the resource to get you started in mastering the Kinect and the exciting possibilities it brings. You'll learn about the Kinect hardware and what it can do. You'll install drivers and learn to download and run the growing amount of Kinect software freely available on the Internet. From there, you'll move into writing code using some of the more popular frameworks and APIs, including the official Microsoft API and the language known as Processing that is popular in the art and creative world.-->--> Along the way, you'll learn principles and terminology. Volumetric computing didn't begin with the Kinect. The field is decades oldif you've ever had an MRI, for example, you have benefitted from volumetric computing technology. Meet the Kinect goes beyond just the one device to impart the principles and terminology underlying the exciting field of volumetric computing that is now wide-open and accessible to the average person. -->What you'll learn-->Install drivers to connect your Kinect to your PC, whether running Windows or Mac OSX Download and run the growing body of software freely available via the Internet Write scripts in the popular Processing language Take advantage of Microsoft's Kinect SDK for Windows Choose a software development environment that suits your needs Grasp principles and terminology underlying the Kinect technology -->Who this book is for--> Meet the Kinect is aimed at technology enthusiasts, including programmers, artists, and entrepreneurs who are fascinated by the possibilities arising from the direct, human-computer interaction enabled by the Microsoft Kinect.
